Self control is when you don't let your feelings rule your actions.
Talking Points:
- Tip #1: Just walk away. Walking away not only removes you from your annoying friend, but it also takes away your ability to do something bad.
- Tip #2: Stop and think about it. Ask yourself questions like “Why do I feel this way?” “Is it worth it to act out for this?” What would a good person do?”
- Tip #3: Do something different. If you’re angry at your friend for bragging, you can distract yourself by playing a different game or talking to some other friends.
Discussion:
- Initial reactions to this topic? What jumped out at you?
- Share a time you lost your cool with a friend or sibling. What made you so mad? How did you react to those feelings?
- Why is it better to walk away when you’re angry? How does a lack of self control get you in trouble?
- What are some things you can do to distract yourself the next time you’re upset with someone?
- Role Play. As a class, create a scenario for teaching self control and choose a few kids to act it out. Have the kids show what a kid without self-control would do and what a kid with self control would do. Discuss which one is better.
